Semaglutide

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone that is released in the gastrointestinal tract in response to eating. One role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood glucose (sugar).

Tirzepatide/B12

Tirzepatide is a single molecule that activates the body’s receptors for GIP and GLP-1, which are natural incretin hormones. Both GIP and GLP-1 receptors are found in areas of the human brain important for appetite regulation. Tirzepatide has been shown to decrease food intake and modulate fat utilization.

Insurance Coverage for Weight Loss

  • Call the number on your insurance card to inquire if your insurance has any plan exclusions for weight loss medications, specifically for Zepbound or Wegovy These same medications are also available under the names Mounjaro and Ozempic for the treatment of diabetes

  • If your insurance does has coverage for weight loss medications, then certain criteria are needed:

    • Your BMI is greater than 30

    • Or a BMI greater than 27 with other medical conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol or prediabetes

  • If your insurance indicates they may cover Zepbound or Wegovy for weight loss and you meet the above criteria, then a prescription will be sent to your pharmacy. If a prior authorization (PA) is required, the pharmacy will notify us and we will submit the requested information to your insurance. They will then either approve or deny the request for coverage.

  • If your insurance has plan exclusions for these medications or the prior auth is denied, these same medications are available through a compounding pharmacy and are shipped to you directly. The average fees are:

    Wegovy / Ozempic = Semaglutide $150 – $250+/mo

    Zepbound / Mounjaro = Tirzepatide $250 – $450+/mo
